A Total Eclipse of Belief

By: Pam Cropper-Vice

It seems like everyone is gearing up for a nearly total eclipse of the sun next week.  In the areas where you can view a total eclipse there is supposed to be a couple of minutes of total darkness.

A total eclipse is very rare and only occurs once in a great while, like a hundred years or so.  Several of my co-workers are taking off from work on eclipse day and driving to a site that features more totality.  I received emails this week telling me that special viewing glasses have been purchased for people working on that day.  But, today, management stated they have been unable to purchase the glasses. They are encouraging us to bring our own and each viewer will receive complimentary ice cream.

This event has really gathered momentum in the last several days and numerous articles have appeared in the newspaper and on social media as a result.  Hotel rooms in the totality area are going for $600.00 per night, if you can find one.  Enterprising home and land owners are renting out viewing spaces on their lawns and pastures. Eclipse merchandise is available from tee shirts and ball caps to bumper stickers.  Get it while it’s hot!  The day after the eclipse, it will be back to normal.

Or will it?  Maybe the eclipse is our wake up call.

You are probably thinking, what wake up call?  I don’t remember Americans uniting and being this excited over an event in a long time.  In fact, I can’t think of a time this has happened on a large scale since the end of World War II and I have only seen that in newsreel footage.  Friends and acquaintances say that this country is in bad shape and we need to go back to the principle it was founded on: One Nation under God.

God’s Word says in II Chronicles 7:14: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

If we as a nation fall on our face before God and cry out to Him, I believe God will hear us and have mercy and heal our land and heal our families.  Then we will be able to wake up in the land of the free and the brave and stand up and gladly say, “I’m proud to be an American, but I’m even more proud to be a God fearing believer!!”
