Contentment Without Godliness

— Ron Servant

There are so many people who are not satisfied with the lives they live. There can be many reasons why they cannot seem to be content with their lives. Some things may be they are bound up into drug and alcohol. The money they make from their jobs is spent on drugs and alcohol and most of these people’s lives are miserable because of their addiction and many of them cannot seem to pay their bills. I understand the disease of addiction. It can take away a lot out of them who are addicted. These addictions are a great epidemic going on in this country.

There are other reasons why so many people cannot be content. Another one of those reasons is that some people have so much money and material possessions they are totally consumed by what they own and have that they forget about the importance of God.

Another reason is some people think all it takes to form a relationship with someone is to spend a lot of money on them. My friends, any kind of relationship that is formed around money is not a genuine relationship. A good relationship has no price tag on it.

There was a time in my life that I was not satisfied with my life at all. I was miserable because I was not satisfied with job or my money because I thought to be happy in life was to have lots of money. I found out later that I was lost and without hope until God came into my life. Once I found Jesus, I began to see my life change into a new person.

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17

I started to live my life for Christ Jesus. I found out that my life began to bring to me purpose and meaning. I started learning what it was like to become content. So to be spiritually content was much better than all the things that money can buy. I started to experience what it means to be grateful and thankful for all things that God had given to me. Once I came to know Jesus as my personal savior I found out that it was not money that made me content, but having a spiritual relationship with Christ.

See, I learned if I could not be thankful with the little things of life, then what could this life give me that would help me enjoy life any better? I believe to have God’s presence is far much better than anything this world could give me. The joy that God gives me surpasses anything I could enjoy in this world. It is good for me to know God loves me more than anyone who could be my closest friends because to know his love is to know a kind of love that is far beyond what we can understand or imagine.

Some of us might have needs and we might think that God might not supply our needs maybe because we have lived without for such a long time. We lack the faith that God will do exactly what his Word says.

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

It is easy to take our minds off God and place our hearts and minds on the things of this world, or the things that money can buy. Once we have found ourselves in this condition, we have become discontented with ourselves and others and the wrongs they may have done to us. This world has a way of breaking up relationships when our hearts and our minds and our thoughts are not on God and the things he would have us to do.

We also become discontent when we are led astray and find ourselves in sins such as adultery or fornication or when some people do not honor God and his divine presence among ourselves. We should also not let ourselves be taken by all the thing that money can buy. So, for us who are Christians, the only way we overcome temptation is by the power of the Holy Spirit which comes through Christ. Once we have tasted the Goodness of the Lord, we should not want to go back and live that life we used to live anymore.

God can and will give us a life full of joy, peace and love once we have left the things of this world behind us and begin to serve him. My friends, the only thing that will last in our lives is giving our lives over to the care of God and placing him as first priority in our lives. We should pray and ask ourselves would we be happier with God’s blessings than all the things that pertain to this world? Where should be place our greater treasure in heaven, or in this world?

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth where moth and rust doth corrupt and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matthew 6:19-21.

A person cannot become content if he is not satisfied with the little things of life. There are people who keep wanting to gain more and more material wealth. They just cannot seem to get enough so they become discontent, ungrateful and unthankful for the things they have already obtained.

But Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. I Timothy 6:6-8

So whether we have an abundance of wealth or just enough to survive let us be content with what God has blessed us with in our lives. God wants us to experience his Joy in the fact that no matter whatever situation we find ourselves in, he wants us to know what it is like to enjoy life to its fullest when we have learned to be satisfied with whatever life he has given to us.

We should realize, which I have experienced in my life, that the world cannot fill the longing of our souls and money will not fill the void or emptiness we have when we look to the world to give us satisfaction. We cannot be content by allowing the things of this world to get in the way of our relationship with God through Jesus Christ. We should never let ourselves fall from God’s grace because we would rather serve this world more than serving God.

We should realize since we know God, that God does not want us to put our material wealth before him. What could we do to take ourselves beyond the place where we are at in life where this world has become first place in our lives? I do think it would be necessary to keep our minds on the thought of others than to think about ourselves most of the time. We should always do as much that is within us to do what we can to be helpful to others. There is a world of people who could use our help that do not have the necessities of life, such as food, clothing and shelter.

So, helping others is a great way to feel useful to God and gives us purpose and meaning to our lives. It also gives glory to God’s Kingdom. Everything we do for the Lord is beneficial to further his purpose to bring his salvation to as many people who will receive him. I want to mention that I know what it is like to suffer from extreme poverty and to be homeless and to be hungry and cold and to be without the basic necessities of life.

Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased and I know how to abound everywhere and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. Philippians 4:11-12

I know that I am not the only one who has been in these conditions. Many of us know what it is to suffer need and to have plenty and to be financially prosperous.

It is far more important to sow seed into God’s kingdom than to serve our own selfish wants and desires. So, by those who are Christians, sowing seed into God’s Kingdom is to know that it is the divine will of God to help others who are less fortunate than ourselves. We cannot truly be content if we hold back our wealth from others. So if we are helping others we cannot go wrong with what God would have us to do for others.

We must also realize that we are not saved by our works but only by Christ Jesus and the blood he shed upon the cross when we was crucified. If we continue in God’s forgiving grace, our works will follow us by having faith in God.

What doth it profit my brethren though a man say he hath faith and have not works can faith save him If a brother or sister be naked and destitute of daily food and one of you say unto them Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works is dead being alone. Yea a man may say Thou hast faith and I have works shew me thy faith without thy works and I will shew thee my faith by my works. (Verse 20) But wilt thou know O vain man that faith without works is dead? James 2:14-18; 20

So as we look at these scriptures we can know that faith without works avails nothing or accomplishes nothing, but we are still saved by grace through faith when we accept Christ as our savior. The point of having faith with works is as Christians we are to grow in the faith of our Lord Jesus and that means that once we have received salvation we are to begin a journey of showing others our love by showing forth our works by our love for Jesus and others.

Once we have come to the knowledge of the truth of God’s Word, we can safely say if we do the will of God, we can also learn contentment by showing forth our works by our faith. I do not think a person who has accepted Christ would be content by doing nothing for God and for others.

God has provided us a way to grow in his knowledge and grace. We should allow God by his Holy Spirit to work through us so we can come to the knowledge of his will for our lives. Everything does not happen by chance. We must have purpose and meaning in our lives to become content with the life God has given us to live.

May God bless you.

Your friend, Ron.
