Not How or Why, But Who

— Ron Servant

There are many ideas in this world. Some people who have researched these ideas believe that they are based on the truth. But some of the ideas are based on theory, which is not necessarily the truth. Some ideas have been discarded because they were not applicable in the real world, and other ideas have been discarded because they were so complicated that only a few people could understand them.

Although many of the theoretical ideas have never been proven, some people believe they are true. But the ideas that are based on firm facts and strong evidence some people choose not to believe are true.

Many people believe that modern man together with modern day technology can cure all of man’s disease. They believe that modern man can cure the incurable – cancer, diabetes, and HIV. Yet no permanent cure has been found for them. We can safely say that science may never find a cure for all the disease known to man.

There is no end to what men think they can do. Some scientists and researchers think that they will be able to stop global warming. Yet they may soon find out that man’s various efforts have little or no effect on global warming. There are hurricanes and typhoons and severe rain storms that weather forecasters predict will land at a certain location at a certain time. We know, however, by what we observe that the weather forecasters are not always right.

I was watching the weather channel the other day and the forecasters predicted that a storm was coming to the area where I lived at a certain time of day. But the storm never came. It was a reminder that man cannot predict all of the catastrophic events that will take place. Forecasters may be able to tell you and I when and where some of these storms will take place but not all the time.

We can ask ourselves, are we so knowledgeable and sophisticated that we can stop the stars from falling from the sky or know when solar systems will collapse? The answer is we cannot. So man must concede that he is not so powerful that he can solve the riddles of the universe, which was not even created by man.

There are some other questions too. Do most people even think about the fact that this world will end someday? Or would they rather only concentrate on what is wrong with the world and try to fix it? Can scientists, doctors, lawyers and researchers in all kinds of fields be satisfied in trying to fix what doesn’t work on earth? And can they accept the fact that there are some things beyond their control?

There are many unanswered questions in the world and a lot of them are way beyond our comprehension. There is a question we have to ask ourselves which brings into question the purpose of life itself. We know we have so much time on this earth and we know that we have to die. So why is it important for us to know the answers to all the hows and whys of life? Maybe we will know the answers someday but they may not be what we expect or be as important as we think they are.

To Create something, there must be a Creator.

Taking stock of ourselves again, we should know that nothing cannot create something. For something to exist, it takes the presence of something or someone to create it. Therefore, for something to be created – for something to be alive, it takes a power, a life-giving power, to create it.

This life-giving power knows all things, understands all things, knows our wants and desire, and our needs. This life-giving power has all the answers to all the questions we are asking to help us get along in this world. This power is far beyond ourselves. This power is God.

The common definition of God is “a supreme being.” There are many ideas about this supreme being called God. Some people want to know where He came from. Others are only interested in what God can do for them. Since God has also been defined as eternal, there is no way that we can know everything about Him. One thing we can know, and that is that God loves us very much and wants us to have a relationship with Him.

There are other things we should know about God. One of them is “How do we get to know Him?” If a man just believes that God exists, he has a chance to know Him. Many people have searched for God through different religions but never found Him. But I believe that if a person really wants to find God and really wants to know Him they must be willing to believe what they cannot see with their eyes. They must be willing to seek God, to find Him and to know Him through faith. And they must come to believe that there is something greater than themselves. When a person acquires faith he knows without a shadow of a doubt that this life-giving power is God.

Getting back to what I explained earlier in this message: Those who have faith don’t need to ask anymore if God exists. They know He does. And those who have faith don’t need to have an answer to all of their questions anymore.

Isaiah 55: 8-9 tells us how great God is and that His understanding and knowledge is way above our own. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.”

Some people do not accept that God’s thoughts are higher than their thoughts. They think their thoughts are as good as God’s or even better. They believe that they have no need for God’s knowledge because their own knowledge is so vast and complete that God’s knowledge is unnecessary.

These people have accumulated vast knowledge during their lifetime, but the most important knowledge of all they do not recognize – the saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

However, we as true Christians know that once we have accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we realize that He is the answer to everything we need to know. We also realize that Father God by His Spirit will reveal to us exactly what we need to know by reading and studying His Word.

The only way that we can truly understand God’s Word is by His Holy Spirit dwelling in us. I Corinthians 2:10-12 states, “But God has revealed them unto us by His Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man, save the spirit of man, which is in him? Even so the things of God knows no man, but the Spirit of God. We have not received the Spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God that we may understand what God has freely given us.”

These verses explain that God reveals things to us by His Spirit through the Holy Spirit to help us understand His Word.

God’s Spirit searches out the deep things of God – even the things we cannot understand except by His Spirit. In other words, the Holy Spirit will lead us to understand the meaning and the knowledge of God’s Word. We cannot understand the things of God except by asking for His knowledge in prayer. Then we understand the things we need to know by listening to His Spirit who speaks to us.

Therefore, by reading and hearing the Scriptures – God’s Word – we understand that only God is infinite and complete in wisdom and knowledge. No one can possibly understand all God’s ways but God has all knowledge in all things in heaven and on earth. We can know many of God’s thoughts by reading and studying His Word, spending time with him in prayer and not leaning on our own understanding. His Spirit will lead us and guide us into the truth of the necessity of knowing His Salvation. We can come to the fullness of what He wants us to be by knowing Him as our Lord and Savior.

The Word of God in Ephesians 3:19-20 says we can “know the love of Christ which passes knowledge, that we might be filled with all the fullness of God. Now unto Him that is able to do abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.”

We can see by these verses that God wants us to know what it is to know the fullness of Him by knowing the love of Christ which passes all knowledge.

The nature of all knowledge and understanding rests on the divine love of God through the power of knowing Jesus Christ as our personal Savior and living our life in the power of the Holy Spirit.

These scriptures also state that God can do more than we ask or think, according to the power that works in us. That power is the power of the Holy Spirit who lives in us and works in us. He is the agent who implements God’s answer to our prayers. The Holy Spirit, Father God and the Lord Jesus know our needs before we ask but He still tells us to ask. In many cases He waits for us to ask before He answers.

So even if we do not understand some things, we can know that what really matters is written in the Gospels. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son so that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Since God’s love passes all knowledge, we must realize He wants a continuing relationship with us. He wants us to know Him better and better and also wants us to know that he will reveal the things on earth that we ask Him to reveal. He will give us all the answers to all our questions when we get to heaven, but He will also give us the answers to our questions here on earth when we ask Him. Right now, He wants us to know His plan of salvation and the power of His Holy Spirit.

Remember, my friends, that Father God wants us all to make it to heaven.
