Encouragement Makes A Difference

— Ron Servant

There are many things that can make us discouraged such as different kinds of problems we face through our lives. These problems can include relationships with coworkers on the job that may not go so well at times because of disagreements about the way things should be run. Problems can also include relationships between family members that become threatened due to abusive behavior, drugs and alcohol.  Other problems can include social interactions between parents and their children.

Other discouragements stem from circumstances like people suffering from loneliness and sickness, to not having enough money to pay the bills. There are natural disasters which have destroyed people’s homes and have brought them great losses. There are losses of loved ones who have passed on. There are many other things that can bring discouragements to people’s lives. The ones just mentioned are only a few.

There is a word opposite of discouragement, though, and that is encouragement. Where can we find encouragement to enable us to continue to get through some of the sufferings and problems we have to go through at times? There are people who are in a position in life that they are able to comfort and encourage others when they face all these difficulties.

There is another place people can turn to and that is to God who will help encourage them when there is nowhere else to get relief from all their troubles.

The apostle Paul is writing to the Thessalonians in the Word of God to encourage them but he found himself stopped at Athens and was not able to be with the Thessalonians at that particular time.

We sent Timothy who is our brother and God’s fellow worker in spreading the gospel of Christ to strengthen and encourage you in our faith so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. I Thessalonians 3:2-3

The trials Paul was referring to was that he was being persecuted in Athens and he had already told the Thessalonians he would be persecuted.

Therefore, bothers in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith. I Thessalonians 3:7

We can see by all the trials Paul we through he always had the strength to press on through all the difficulties he faced since the Thessalonians had encouraged Paul by their faith and love in the Lord. We can know no matter what kinds of problems we face, we can still be encouraged by the apostle’s examples of what it is like to suffer.

We can know that God has the power to help us get through the most difficult situations and come out victorious through anything we may face in this life, and without God’s help we can do nothing. We can also see through the scriptures even though most of us have had troubles within our families, our jobs, our losses, whatever they may be. God has encouraged us through the Word of God that we have hope.

The apostles throughout the New Testament and the prophets and kings in the Old Testament were chosen by God to spread the gospel even though they had to suffer many things. They were still encouraged by the Lord to carry their message so we could learn to be able to handle anything that we have to face like the troubles of this life. By their example we could  be encouraged by them and inspired by the Holy Spirit of God to receive the good things to come, even the gift of eternal life. There is another kind of encouragement, it happens when people come together for a common cause when others need someone to help them to continue on with their lives.

The kind of help many people need is the help of others to help rebuild their lives like after a natural disaster. It is good to have friends to encourage us especially when some of us have a real need. Encouragement from friends or even strangers can give us hope. Some of us tend to lose hope from all the problems we have.

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

We can learn from this scripture that the Word of God explains how the eternal encouragement was give to us by his grace and that encouragement is referring to the redemption of our bodies when we shall be changed from mortality to immortality. When Jesus comes again we shall live forever in his eternal kingdom.

For this corruptible must put on incorruption and this mortal must put on immortality. 1 Corinthians 15:33

This is when our bodies shall be changed from this deathly body into a body which will never die again.

This is the greatest hope we can have in the midst of trouble that one day we will never have to suffer again. The troubles of this life will be gone for us who know the Lord Jesus as our personal savior, and also our faith will give us the victory over any trials we face here on earth.

So when people see the evidence of God’s grace working in our lives and in others, there is nothing to hinder God from doing all kinds of miraculous wonders.

We who are Christians should be encouraged in this country and we should encourage them who have experienced their lives being shattered that they are not alone. This is still a land where God works on our behalf. We still have in this country the hope of our Christian liberties being protected. This is a great blessing and an encouraging hope for all believers.

There is another side of people in this country who would seek to destroy Christian’s rights to exist. We know God is on our side.

What shall we say to these things if God be for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31

God is the defender of our lives. He protects us from anyone who would hurt us if we have faith in him and have been faithful to him. All we can do is to be faithful to the best of our ability, and when we serve him there is no other power here on earth that can separate us from his grace.

The Lord Jesus is looking for those who know him to sow seed for God’s kingdom. He wants us to go out and encourage those lives who have suffered and lost so much and tell them that God and others in this life will be there to give them hope. There are many different kinds of encouraging things we can do for others.

  • Encourage school teachers who teach children
  • Support children and their families who have been diagnosed with cancer.
  • Never put anyone down because of the way they look or act.
  • Tell others that God is always with them.
  • Tell those who cry that God hears their cries.
  • Pray for those who are less fortunate.

May God bless everyone. Be encouraged by the Lord to continue to grow in the Word of God and to continue to increase your faith. May God strengthen you always.
