Not So Fast … Have Patience

–Ron Servant

Many people are in a hurry or in a rush. They cannot seem to have enough time to get everything done in one day. They become so busy they do not take time to do the things that are really important. These things can be taking time to do a certain project that needs to be done by some deadline date or they wait until the last minute to try to get it done. We should also make time for rest because rest is essential for our bodies to function well on an everyday basis.

There are those people who drive an automobile that do not have the patience to drive safely, always getting in a hurry to get to their destination. There are many accidents on the roads due to people’s negligence of not giving other drivers the right of way when they are at traffic lights or four way stops.

People also have accidents talking on their cell phones or texting on their phones instead of waiting until they are finished driving to do their talking. You and I have seen this happen over and over, especially for those of us who drive. There are many things that take patience to achieve. These are but a few things. We all need to be patient with each other when we find ourselves in difficult situations.

People who are not patient with other people tend to get angry or get into a fit of rage. What can we do on our part that will help us with people who are very angry with us and others who have been treated wrong? One thing we should not do is to retaliate. We should be patient with them. We should hold our peace and ask God for compassion to work through us by seeking his guidance through prayer.

We should also be patient enough to let them say whatever they may say even if it offends us. This also takes tolerance and love on our part. Since there are people who have anger issues, we need to learn to seek peace and we can only learn this by the power of the Holy Spirit and the same kind of patience the Lord has shown us, so we may be able to endure these problems ourselves.

We do not need to hold a grudge against anyone. We always need to be forgiving and loving and kind as we can be or as much as the Lord will give us the strength to do so. This kind of forgiveness and love comes, as we know, from that power that is greater than ourselves and that power is Jesus Christ. Therefore if he rules heaven and earth and has all power in heaven as well as on this earth, he is more able since he gave his life for us to give us the spirit of compassion and love.

Where else could we find patience to endure all the trials we often face in this life were it not for the presence of the Holy Spirit? When I was speaking earlier about the many things that take patience I do believe this one I am going to mention is one of the most important of all. We all need patience if we have families. We need to take time to spend with them. I do not know anything that could cause more problems than not making enough time to spend with our families, especially if it is our spouse and children.

We also need to have patience to develop relationships. We cannot get to know people overnight. It generally takes a few years to develop a good relationship with others. We can develop great relationships with other people that we can admire with great happiness if we take our time to get to know them. The situation with our government is very unfortunate because political officials have a very difficult time getting along with one another and become very impatient when it comes to agreeing on issues between the democrats and republicans to be able to govern this country.

Most people or citizens of this country think Congress is dysfunctional. They cannot seem to agree on the many issues in this country that need to be answered in order for this country to keep operating under the many different conditions it is in today. You and I and others can see the impatience in our government. We can also see there is much hate between the two parties. People who get impatient with others can cause them to become mentally ill because of the way others act toward them or the way they are treated.

Some of these people who are affected mentally can become anxious and can become worried in their minds. Or, become afraid of other people. Some people sometimes become impatient when they are unemployed and are looking for a job.

We may ask ourselves how can we have patience in a world that is almost always in a hurry? We who are Christians need to ask the Lord in prayer to help us to develop patience and tolerance and love among other people and ask God what can we do to improve our situation we find ourselves in that requires patience. It is true to say that this world needs to realize that we are not just here to do whatever we want when we want it. This world takes people working together to get along to work for worthy causes. We just cannot keep on going without caring for others and having no regard for others.

Patience is generally a quality that some people have a lack of in this world, so we who are Christians need to be as patient as we can, because bad things can happen if we are not patient with whatever is going on around us. We do not need to lash out at other people because we have a lack of patience.

Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance. Christ came into the world to save sinners of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.  I Timothy 1:13-16

We know that if we take a look at these scriptures that Paul, before he received Christ, was a very evil person. Even though he was a very evil person God had a plan for his life and was very patient with him and the Lord showed him great mercy and compassion. The apostle Paul admitted to God and his followers that he was a sinner and needed Christ to save him.

We can see the great patience God has for sinners who are lost just as Paul was lost. We who are Christians should pray for those who are evil that the Lord’s patience will work through us toward them who are impatient with us and to those who even hate us. The patience of God has endured for such a long time that we can see he has passed on his patience through his prophets and the kings he chose for his kingdom Israel and toward all the world. He is always waiting for the next person to call out or cry out upon his name.

The patience of God can be in us that we can show forth his unlimited love for all mankind if we are truly allowing his love to work through us. No matter if there have been other people who have treated us wrong, we can rest assured that God’s patience will help us endure all the hardships that the world may place in our way.

God’s unlimited love and patience can help us grow in him into a better person every day, and through his patience can also help us grow closer to him and begin to strengthen our relationship with him so we can be more like Christ Jesus.

We also must be patient that God will answer our prayers and he will not answer when we want him but God does things through our prayers on his time not on ours because he has a time and a season for everything under the sun. The patience of God can show us how we can resolve problems that used to be too complicated for solutions because it takes time for us to think and pray through things.

Patience is something that, for some people, will not come easy. It is something we must practice on an everyday basis as God will give us the power to become patient with all the things that may be way beyond what we can accomplish on our own. Patience can help us bear fruit unto the Lord. It can take life that is empty and give that life substance to be plentiful in good works. Therefore, for us to help others with what God has already given us, it will take patience.

But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23

We can see by the scriptures that these fruits of the spirit will be in us if we follow Christ and grow closer to God. These fruits will not always happen overnight. We have to be patient in the Lord and wait on him and spend more time studying his Word.
