Purpose and Meaning

—  Ron Servant

There are so many opportunities that are in different parts of the world, especially here in America. Many people use these opportunities to help them make a better life for them and their families. These opportunities give them the idea of what kind of person they would like to become in this ever changing and continuously growing world in which we live.

One of these opportunities people seek to accomplish is to get an education to better improve their quality of life. Almost everyone would like to achieve some kind of purpose and success in their lives.

Another opportunity is not just to improve the quality of life, but to help them in the working world by improving their skills in the work place. They can first achieve this by getting a higher education. One of the areas people seek opportunity is by choosing what kind of occupation they would like to pursue. They can get the skills they need by getting on-the-job training.

One of these occupations is construction. There are many different phases of construction. One is building homes that includes every job from carpentry, to block masonry; from electrical and plumbing, to installing dry wall, home appliances and cabinets. The kinds of jobs are limitless. These are just a few areas where people seek to be productive in the working world and seek to achieve some sense of accomplishment.

There are many different areas of life to improve our well-being, but do these areas have the true purpose and meaning people seek so hard to find? Or, are they really looking for something else in their lives? Do these opportunities give us the main purpose and meaning of the reason why we are here in this life?

We know this world requires knowledge and wisdom and understanding for us to be able to learn and grow into what this life can do to help us get along in the world.

I know from my own experience that this world does not hold the keys to the true knowledge, wisdom, and understanding to the true purpose of our existence in this world. Therefore, the only kind of success is to know the knowledge and wisdom and understanding that come from God.

He can give us the purpose and meaning of what he would have us to be. God is the only one who can give us the main growing experience of what this life is really supposed to be in our lives. The main purpose we are here in this world is not just to grow and succeed in the working world, but to grow in God’s knowledge, wisdom, and understanding and to know his love and mercy.

God has a plan for all of our lives. He can use anyone who comes to know him as Lord and Savior. No matter what knowledge we gain in this life or the kind of knowledge that is of this world, this knowledge will never surpass the kind of wisdom and knowledge that comes from God.

God and only God has the keys to all knowledge, wisdom and understanding and he gives these three things to help us to know how to survive in this world. There are some of us who may think that we have no purpose and meaning in our lives. Those of us who think this way tend to lose hope and feel useless. All of us want to have some kind of success, but for some people’s lives, they may suffer from afflictions.

These afflictions may take a toll on their lives that they may not be able to do the things that others do. It is significant as Christians in this world to have or develop good social skills. It is not only important to have these skills in the working world, but to have the skills necessary to be able to communicate to people who do not believe in Christ what they need to know about the knowledge of God that comes through knowing Christ as Lord and Savior.

Once we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, our lives begin to change. We start to see a new person.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature, old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

We will never find the solution to all the problems we face in this world or know the blessings of life unless we acknowledge God in all our ways.

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

The knowledge we have as believers from studying the Word of God can never be replaced by worldly things and his knowledge will give us the purpose and meaning of what to do to help others with their needs and to be an effective witness of God’s love. When we are confronted with difficult problems, God will give us the insight to know how to handle those difficult situations as they arise in our lives. God has not only given us purpose and meaning but he explains to those who know him as their savior, that he wants us to have fulfillment in our lives. God has called us to a greater purpose than what this world can give to us.

“But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ … And he gave some apostles and some prophets; and some evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers. For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, til we all come in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the son of God unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the statute of the fullness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:7; 11-13

We who are Christians are to communicate to others – whether believers or unbelievers – what importance it is to know the knowledge of God and to be complete in him and to know what it is to be a part of the Body of Christ. Also, to teach or preach if that is what God has called us to, so others can learn what the Word of God says to help them grow in the Lord and know what it is to have fulfillment in their lives.
